The Human Landscape Histories Lab is the research lab of Lauren Kohut (Winthrop University). Our research uses multidisciplinary approaches to examine histories of human-environment interaction across multiple time scales.

Facilities and Equipment

The HLH Lab maintains the Geospatial Environmental Modeling (GEM) Lab. GEM houses four high-performance workstations equipped with GIS, remote sensing, and photogrammetry software. The lab is located on the 2nd floor of Sims Hall at Winthrop University.

Current Students

Ambar Núñez Gómez

My name is Ambar Nunez Gomez. I am a Modern Languages Major with a concentration in Spanish, with a double minor in Computer Science and Political Science. I will be graduating Spring of 2024, with hopes of pursuing a job in the cybersecurity industry with emphasis on hacking. I am on the Track & Field team here at Winthrop and I also work in the IT department. My favorite shows are Avatar the Last Airbender, Demon Slayer, and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Aspen Lee Caffee

Aspen Lee Caffee is a biology conservation and environmental studies dual degree student in the class of 2027. They are passionate about all issues impacting the sustainability of life on earth and have experience in digital climate change activism and local environmental action through clubs and government work. They have special interests in entomology, environmental justice, agriculture, and parks services and hope to explore some of these in their future career. Outside of school, Aspen plays music and writes fiction for fun.

Joseph Metcalf

Joseph Metcalf is currently a senior at Winthrop university working to get a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences. He plans to move on to graduate school to earn a doctorate in Ecology. He joined the Humanity Research lab because researching the relationship between conflict and changes in the environment sounded like a wonderful opportunity to gain real-world skills.
